All relationships progressed to a certain point, where the thoughts of moving to the next level sort of crept in. Okay, maybe not all. The good ones, anyway. And Zhou Mi had found the good one he’d been looking for. Okay, so it had kind of taking some cajoling, and Kyuhyun had - when they’d gotten more comfortable around each other - whined about his lack of gaming time. But it was give and take. They compromised, and had fun. No shopping every day. Dinners out, or them valiantly trying to cook for each other. They traded off on shows they watched together, and he watched Kyuhyun game. It was kind of interesting, especially as he learned more. His boyfriend was kind of smart. And could run rings around him mathematically, that, too. Kyuhyun only occasionally sneered at him for that.
And it wasn’t always the things they could do together, but the things they could do to each other, too. Kyuhyun flopping back in victory after a rousing success was usually reason enough to for him to get on his knees and pop the button of Kyuhyun’s pants. Maybe Kyuhyun suggested it once or twice, but Zhou Mi wasn’t against the idea of equating gaming + orgasms in Kyuhyun’s mind. If Kyuhyun was thinking of sex while doing the thing he did most often in his spare time, that meant Zhou Mi had a higher chance of getting some when he wasn’t.
The rest of the time Kyuhyun really just wanted to ride the victory and get back to gaming. And they compromised there, too. It usually ended with Kyuhyun shuddering above him, and that was victory in itself.
The real obstacle to them moving to the next level wasn’t sex. They had gotten to the stay-over-several-nights-a-week stage. They’d passed the keep-stuff-at-both-apartments stage. And Kyuhyun’s lease was going to be up. It made him think deep and thinky thoughts about the possibility of Kyuhyun moving in. The subway was close. Kyuhyun’s work was close. They seemed to do well together, just being around each other as much as they were.
But the problem was evident every time he came home from Kyuhyun’s apartment. Niqiu, the fuzzy dog of doom as Kyuhyun put it, would all but attack him, in glee of seeing him yes, but also to sniff him everywhere. His shoes, his hands, his pants, like he was sneaking in illegal contraband.
Because Kyuhyun had a cat. A white and gray fuzzy mop with gorgeous green eyes by the name of Raynor. Not only was the name impossible to say at first, but it didn’t really seem to suit the cat who wanted nothing but to use their laps or laptops as a warming pad. Petting not always need be included. The cat had apparently been a friend’s, and Kyuhyun had inherited him. Kyuhyun, allergic to cats quite severely, had luckily adapted to his pet. And he didn’t let on just how much he enjoyed watching Kyuhyun carry around the cat like a baby.
The cat fur he had to get off of his clothes was something else, but he was learning. Definitely no cat allowed in the laundry hamper if they did find a way to make living together work out. Broaching the subject had Kyuhyun blinking at him. The logical question was not “could we sleep together in the same bed all the time and not want to kill each other,” it was “how do we keep two animals from committing pet-icide.” Cat. Dog. The combination could work, but all they had to go on was Niqiu’s occasional barking at a cat on a walk, and Raynor’s. Well. Ability to roll over and sleep.
The amount of thought Kyuhyun put into it was endearing. Could the animals coexist? He took it as a definite sign that it had been the right time for them to talk about the possibilities. Cordoning off the pets. Introducing them to each other. Kyuhyun pulled up articles, and reasoned that the animals had been smelling each other for months. That was something.
“Breakfast together all the time,” Zhou Mi murmured, kissing under Kyuhyun’s ear.
“Niqiu barking at all hours of the night at the cat,” Kyuhyun countered.
Test run and introduction, they’d decided on. Kyuhyun’s apartment would be best. Even if Niqiu was blitzed from a new location, Raynor knew the territory and could get away if he needed to. Niqiu had never shown signs of real aggression. And Zhou Mi wanted to believe, really badly, that the animals would just miraculously get along. Like friends. Not like Tom & Jerry.
Niqiu was intensely excited, flopping at every single thing they saw on the street as they made their way to Kyuhyun’s apartment. They couldn’t wait forever to try. They needed to be able to make a solid decision, or at least know they had the opportunity to do so. Trying not to cross his fingers in the elevator as Kyuhyun just rolled his eyes.
“As long as they don’t kill each other, right? It’s a start.”
“Can we think more positive?” Zhou Mi begged.
Niqiu was straining at the leash, poking his nose at the bottom of Kyuhyun’s door as Kyuhyun unlocked it. Step one, done. It was Zhou Mi’s plan, at least, to keep Niqiu on his leash. If Niqiu barked forever, at least he wouldn’t be able to actually get at Raynor and possibly start a fight.
That was his plan, until in the process of taking off his shoes, he fumbled the leash.
Raynor stalked into the room to see what the commotion was.
Niqiu instantly spotted his quarry. And no amount of scrabbling was getting the dog back.
“Niqiu!”
But the dog wasn’t listening. He had the cat in his sights, frozen in its indecision at this loud and large intruder. But the cat didn’t have opportunity to do more than try to leap away, before he was bowled over by a fluffy dog more than twice his size. Raynor hissed, rolling. Batting at the trembling dog above him. Zhou Mi wasn’t sure which animal he was meant to dive in and save, both he and Kyuhyun standing over them. Niqiu gave a quiet woof, and Raynor was back on four paws, and the two humans just stared.
Niqiu was rather anxiously nibbling and licking at Raynor’s neck and shoulders, and Raynor was…taking it. Poised between Niqiu’s front legs in a position of defeat and staring toward them as though to ask, who let this doofus in the front door? Dad?.
“Am I watching a metaphor for our relationship?” Kyuhyun asked.
It took Zhou Mi a moment. The dog attacking and showering his affection. The cat reluctantly taking it. And the shove had Kyuhyun staggering with laughter.
Niqiu seemed to think Raynor was his best new fluffy toy, following the cat around the apartment as though he was excited to have someone moving around with him. Of course the cat got frustrated, glowering down at the panting dog from a perch on Kyuhyun’s desk, but Niqiu went back to bothering his chew toys or dreaming doggy dreams. There was some hissing, and a few barks. A few swipes of a paw without claws extended when Niqiu overstepped his boundaries and had to be put back in line. But they’d both seen the cat sneaking into the dog’s food bowl, or when Niqiu was passed out, Raynor plopping down and using him as a heater. Raynor even endured the occasional tongue baths, fur coming out a little spikier for the experience. But nothing that indicated that it wouldn’t work out. So Kyuhyun, in a very Kyuhyun-like way, had started moving in, even if Zhou Mi didn’t realize it immediately. His adorable pots of face cream underwent a full out Starcraft action figure assault. And that was his clue that Kyuhyun was staying for keeps.
“I was concerned they’d try to kill each other,” Zhou Mi said, watching the cat stalk the dog from one room to the next. “Now I’m worried they’re going to commit mutiny.”
Kyuhyun grunted, digging his heel into Zhou Mi’s thigh, and never taking his eyes from the screen. Working for the glory of-- He wasn’t actually certain. Important, whatever it was. Occupancy of the apartment had doubled. No bloodshed on the horizon, and a boyfriend who enjoyed giving him leg massages with his feet as he moved with whatever he was doing on his laptop screen. Or bruises, depending on if Kyuhyun was winning or not.
As for keeping the cat off of the bed, as he had woken a few times with Raynor purring against the top of his head, well. They were still working on that.
(Kyuhyun told him he had a hot head, the only explanation he’d accept. Zhou Mi insisted the reverse had to be true. It wasn’t an argument they’d settled. Regarding alone time, neither pet was impressed with the closed bedroom door. But when it came to that, Zhou Mi thought as he stroked Kyuhyun’s hair, there were no compromises.)
