Even just to get through that night at work, Kyuhyun had to block Zhou Mi’s presence at Satin from his mind altogether. Probably almost hyper focused on his clients. He didn’t even take his break with Zhou Mi that night, sitting with a few of the others and just vegetating until he had to go back out. Ryeowook's advice sort of bounced around in his head. It wasn't as thought he had kind of ironclad plan, some kind of guaranteed win to implement. Ryeowook had said the only thing he had to worry about was if Zhou Mi liked men, and that was mostly true. The bigger part of that was needing to make sure Zhou Mi liked Kyuhyuns. That he was nice and concerned was one thing, because he was nice and concerned about every other person. He just had to keep himself together. Just a few more hours. No one was going to try and make out with Zhou Mi while he wasn’t looking. But somehow he made it.
"While you were gone, I got a call from my parents," Zhou Mi started when they were in the car. "They've been wanting to come see me for a while, and everything sort of started working out okay for them. I was thinking they could use the spare room, if that was okay with you? It'll be pretty soon."
"Sure, that's great! How long has it been since you've seen them?"
"A year, at least," Zhou Mi said. "Though we talk a lot on the phone and I send them a lot of pictures."
"No arguments from me."
"Great. Thank you, Kui Xian."
“Hey,” Zhou Mi said after they had been driving a while, and kind of awkwardly, too. “Tomorrow… Um. There’s a birthday party for one of my friends tomorrow. It’s more or less the same people I’ve gone out with. I’ve been kind of… Did you want to go?”
Kind of short notice, he thought, staring at Zhou Mi’s tight hands on the wheel. But the hell he was going to let Zhou Mi go on his own and get set up with some other moron. He just wondered why Zhou Mi had waited so long to ask him about it. That was the worrying part.
“Yeah, sure,” he said. And just sat and listened as Zhou Mi chattered on about the people they’d be seeing. He was assured that he didn’t need to bring a gift, just to show up and be counted. Which worked for him.
He’d been starting to think that this shadow group of friends of Zhou Mi’s was made of something sort of insidious. Plotting up all sorts of schemes, like how to drive people crazy without actually ever having met them. The thing about it was that Zhou Mi hadn’t seemed very happy about being set up either. Neither blind date had seemed to go particularly well, not for Zhou Mi particularly, and certainly for him. The way he looked at it, a night out with Zhou Mi’s friends was almost like he was the blind date. If there was anything to find out about Zhou Mi’s feelings for him, if there was anything there beside friendship, then that was when he would find out about it. He hoped anyway.
Heechul was there, and that didn’t surprise him too much. So when he thought about it, it was kind of a meeting of mutual friends. The club they went to was small, mostly made of seating like a restaurant. Hardly a shady club. Though considering how Zhou Mi was dressed, rather conservatively, that shouldn’t have shocked him either. They got drinks first thing, going to the area that had been staked out for the little gathering, and Zhou Mi introduced him. The hand that had been on his back throughout it had been nice. Very nice.
They apparently knew quite a bit about him, that he worked with Zhou Mi and was on his computer a lot. So he just waited for them to be introduced to him. Zhou Mi had gone to school with a couple of them, and met a few more just from gatherings just like the one they were at. He picked at the greasy food that had been pushed in front of him as Zhou Mi laughed at someone across the table from them. It was pretty informal, for a birthday party. He was glad that Zhou Mi had made sure they were sitting together, even asking one of the others to move. It was just less awkward that way, that was all.
Zhou Mi got them a second round of drinks as he talked games, sitting down with someone at his heels.
“Come on, baby,” the guy cajoled. Clearly trying to get Zhou Mi to dance. His indignation rose unbidden.
Kyuhyun was determined to keep his mouth shut for once. But that didn’t keep him from casually hiking his arm up onto the back of the bench and letting his fingers dangle onto Zhou Mi’s shoulder. And he might have sent what amounted to a death glare for a moment or three. The guy didn’t seem quite as interested in Zhou Mi in the seconds after that.
“Idiot,” he muttered. Not meaning Zhou Mi.
Zhou Mi patted his fingers with a kind of knowing glance, telling him that he knew what had just happened.
“What?” Kyuhyun asked. “I didn’t even say anything.”
“I know you, Kui Xian,” Zhou Mi said.
Did Zhou Mi really know him? Had he saw the thoughts that had gone through Kyuhyun’s head, the threats against this man who saw Zhou Mi as someone he wanted to get his hands all over? Or the realization that now when Kyuhyun considered that Zhou Mi could be dealing with those kind of advances every time he went out. And obviously it wasn’t like Kyuhyun was there every time, and not the times that Zhou Mi was out on blind dates or getting guys shoved in his face.
“Do you like to dance?” Zhou Mi asked, hand kind of sliding along his arm and lightly tugging.
“Um,” he sort of stuttered out, following Zhou Mi out of the booth by standing. “I don’t really know how, I think.”
“Maybe it’s a good time to learn,” Zhou Mi suggested, sort of backing up and waiting for Kyuhyun to follow.
He raised his eyebrows and stepped forward. That was an intriguing prospect. They kind of shifted together at first, sort of tentatively feeling out the music. Of course, at that point the music changed. At least it wasn’t like in the movies where the song ended up changing to a slow one. That would have been a cap to his night. He figured he might have had some rhythm if only he’d learned how. So he really could only do what he knew. Zhou Mi seemed to know what he was doing, so that was something at least. Even if he kind of looked like an awkward shuffling turtle beside him. Was that something that roommates did? Dancing together? Maybe it wasn’t all that strange.
“Sorry, I have no idea what I’m doing,” he apologized, getting close enough to where Zhou Mi could hear him.
“Not many do,” Zhou Mi said, and he felt the puff of his laughter.
Was that going to embarrass Zhou Mi, though? Having some kind of flopsy swaying branch in front of him. He was trying not to move his arms at all, sort of galumphing and pretending he was dancing. At least until Zhou Mi started trying to guide his arms, moving them with the music, until Kyuhyun was grinning and sort of trying to match Zhou Mi’s movements. And when the arms kept going, Zhou Mi went for his hips, hands brushing Kyuhyun’s waist with a frighteningly solid touch, one that sent a shiver up his spine.
“Don’t be afraid to move,” Zhou Mi told him. “The only person you’re dancing for is the person you’re dancing with.”
It was bad that the mention of dancing with Zhou Mi gave him an initial image of a different kind of dance, one they could do naked. Or maybe one that had him grinding up against Zhou Mi with their clothes on. And a little kissing.
“How stupid of a dance do you want to see?” he joked, letting his chest bump up against Zhou Mi’s. It made it harder to dance, more like they were just sort of moving the music, but that was okay to him.
For a second he almost thought that Zhou Mi had kissed his cheek, Zhou Mi’s face turning into his so quickly. And then he felt a hand at his shoulder that wasn’t Zhou Mi’s.
“You mind?” some guy asked, looking between Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi as though wondering which would back away first. This guy wanted to dance with him? Him? The great flailing wonder? Zhou Mi would’ve been a better choice.
“No, sorry,” Zhou Mi said, and angled Kyuhyun’s body further into his.
Sorry, pal, Kyuhyun’s expression probably should’ve said, but he’d focused back on the fact that Zhou Mi had his arm around him, and had just shooed a man away. Kind of forcefully, too. And that was kind of sexy.
“Why can you do that for me, and not yourself?” he asked, getting his hand onto Zhou Mi’s shoulder.
“Isn’t it easier when it’s someone else?”
But was it? He wasn’t sure, because Zhou Mi wouldn’t look at him, kind of leading Kyuhyun into a sort of dizzying circle. Woozy, he was following Zhou Mi anywhere. He tried not to focus on Zhou Mi’s ear. Standing so close, it was like something out of some kind of offbeat fantasy. Even the idea that Zhou Mi could be feeling anything like he was was almost impossible. Wanting his body, needing his touch, his company, his voice. He was some kind of yawning chasm of Zhou Mi-neediness. And he had no idea when it had really gotten to that point. Or why it seemed to be so much clearer when they were on their own, just the two of them. When he had time to think, yes, Zhou Mi is with me. Of course, they weren’t doing as much dancing as they were swaying into each other.
Zhou Mi didn’t take his hand off Kyuhyun’s back the whole way to the table, and only reluctantly when they had sat down. He leaned companionably into Zhou Mi’s shoulder and sipped his warming drink, just observing. How Zhou Mi interacted with the others, the way his fingers moved. He wasn’t really there that night to make friends with Zhou Mi’s friends. He was there for Zhou Mi. Standing when he stood, trying not to laugh too hard when the others embarrassed themselves on the dance floor.
“You having fun?” Zhou Mi asked him, smiling with his eyes and stroking Kyuhyun’s forearm for a moment.
“Yeah,” he said simply. There was something in Zhou Mi’s eyes that he didn’t understand, some kind of question. He wanted to ask what it was, but he didn’t even know how to begin. “You?”
“I’m glad you came,” Zhou Mi said.
His heart or his stomach or his kidney one, took a sharp turn to the right at those words. And before he could really process it, he was being pulled aside.
“Come with me,” Heechul said, sort of pushing him to go ahead of him.
“What?”
Heechul was unrelenting. “I need a drink, go.”
Kyuhyun went a bit grudgingly, edging up to the bar ahead of Heechul.
“I thought I got you to move in with him, not fall in love with him.”
Kyuhyun could almost feel his brain atrophying right there, like his brain cells were all running for cover in the face of that announcement. The only thing that kept him from strangling Heechul in horror was the fact that Zhou Mi was far enough away from them that he could not possibly have heard.
“Why would you say that?” he asked, feeling a bit threatening even if the words themselves came out sounding a bit too…scared?
“You’ve been here an hour and something? And you’ve already saved him from a molester, got tugged out to dance, and giggled all over each other. He can’t sit beside you and not touch you, and you sit there like some goofy dog who got some attention. And don’t you dare tell me you’re just friends.”
“I don’t understand.”
Okay, that was kind of a lie, because he did understand. He did. He just had no idea what he was supposed to say. It wasn’t like he and Heechul were particularly close or anything, but he had the feeling that admitting anything to Heechul would make it to the wrong ears. Even if he didn't admit anything.
“Look at Zhou Mi for a second,” Heechul ordered.
Of course, he’d been determinedly not looking at Zhou Mi, and he’d barely focused on Zhou Mi’s face when Zhou Mi looked up and they played an awkward game of not meeting each other’s eyes for a second before he looked back to Heechul.
“What’s your point?”
“That he keeps looking up at you. Congratulations, you’ve created a Zhou Mi magnet.”
“But that’s him to me, not…”
Heechul was crafty, he realized. He had sounded like he had wanted Kyuhyun to admit that he liked Zhou Mi, or more, but had ended up illustrating that it was Zhou Mi who… Who what? Didn’t want Kyuhyun to get pulled into Heechul’s clutches? What did he expect to happen? All those times he’d been distracted, all the times he’d been drawn to go in for some kind of a kiss. All the times he’d been hugged, touched. The way that Zhou Mi guided him. Helped him. It was different now, a little, than before. He just wanted to be able to see into Zhou Mi’s brain. If he wanted, at all, why would he go on those blind dates? That didn’t make any sense. But if he thought that Kyuhyun wasn’t interested, or maybe he was trying to see if Kyuhyun was going to make some kind of reaction? If all the time that Kyuhyun had wanted to tell him not to go, Zhou Mi was wanting Kyuhyun to give him a reason not to?
He went back to the table with a beer, because it would’ve been stupid to go back empty handed. Maybe he could’ve found some other place to sit, but he didn’t. Letting Zhou Mi’s hand guide him down beside him. And Heechul followed with a round of shots. Yeah, that was all he needed. To get drunk. But keeping both their mouths filled kept Zhou Mi from asking any pesky questions, like what he’d been talking about with Heechul. He and Zhou Mi were just normal. Normal roommates, where Zhou Mi’s arm was along the back of the booth behind him, mouth close to Kyuhyun’s ear as he told tales about his friends. Stories that got funnier with every shot he took. He didn’t even pay attention to how much Zhou Mi was drinking, unaware of how quick the time was going until Zhou Mi was nudging at him to stand.
“Let’s go home, okay?”
He felt pretty sober, watching Zhou Mi say goodbye to everyone, and a few of those with hugs. He didn’t realize he was scowling until he saw Heechul’s smirking face. No matter what happened, it was him that Zhou Mi was leaving with. He was the one carrying Zhou Mi’s bag as he shrugged on his jacket and waiting beside him as they watched for the subway. It was him.
They collapsed against each other on one of the short benches, Zhou Mi taking back his bag and sort of cheerfully poking through it for his cell phone. He wondered what it’d be like to hold those hands. Kind of awkward, he thought. They were long fingered and bony. Though, his own were long fingered and bony, too, so he didn’t have a whole lot of area to talk. Maybe that was a sign that they were meant. They were born with too long of fingers to hold any other people’s hands. Though as he used his hand to scratch an itch behind his neck, he wondered just how much he’d had to drink. Enough to make him think ridiculous thoughts, that was for sure. Holding Zhou Mi’s hand. Leaning against him for a kiss.
He jerked upright with a start when their station was announced, and realized he’d been drifting sideways, his cheek against Zhou Mi’s shoulder for a least a few moments. But at least he hadn’t actually tried to kiss him.
He pretended to be sober the whole way home, deliberately walking behind Zhou Mi, slouching coolly in the elevator.
“Did you have a good time?” Zhou Mi asked him as they rode upward.
“I did,” he said. “It was cool meeting the people you hang out with.”
That was definitely the Rated-G version of how he mentally described the perpetrators of those blind dates.
“I think they liked meeting you, too, since I talk about you a lot,” Zhou Mi said. “Maybe since they’ve met you…”
They’d what? Lay off with the dating thing? I have a roommate, guys, I can’t date. Did that make sense?
He dropped his junk by the door like some kind of sack of vegetables, ironically feeling worse once they were in their own space.
“Bed, clothes,” he muttered. Not in that order, clearly.
“That’s a good idea,” Zhou Mi said, and it sounded like he was being laughed at a little. Well, he’d showed him.
He thought it was kind of funny that he looked to Zhou Mi after he got his shirt stripped off, and that Zhou Mi was still sitting on the side of the bed and looking at him. Was there anything particularly interesting about watching him undress? Unless Zhou Mi thought he was sexy. Who wouldn’t? He was a sexy man. Anyone would want him. Zhou Mi should want him. Except for the part where he probably didn’t.
Still, he watched Zhou Mi’s face, not even thinking to try and be sexy as he worked at his pants. He could just push down his underwear, too, and Zhou Mi would really get an eyeful. He kind of laughed at that, letting his head loll back.
“Kui Xian?”
Zhou Mi was right there, literally, as he opened his eyes.
“Hm? What’s wrong?”
“You were standing and giggling to yourself for a while.”
“Oh.”
Zhou Mi was so close, he thought. If he just sort of breathed and leaned, he could smell him. Just sort of communing with the air around him, and Zhou Mi’s imagined nakedness, and all those sort of things.
“Are you really that drunk?” Zhou Mi asked him.
With his eyes still closed, he shook his head, and nearly lost his balance.
His skin flashed cold as Zhou Mi’s hands grasped his ribs, touching, fingers adjusting against him as Zhou Mi made sure he wasn’t going to go toppling over. Warm hands against too-sensitive skin. He oozed against Zhou Mi like melting jelly, breathing against his neck as he got both arms around him. And Zhou Mi followed suit, squeezing him.
“Well, now I know you’re not an angry drunk,” Zhou Mi said. “I wasn’t paying attention to how many shots Heechul gave you.”
He snorted softly in response. Zhou Mi was amusing, that was for sure. Very amusing. And whatever Zhou Mi was doing - was he tracing Kyuhyun’s ear with his nose? - There wasn’t any complaints. How many shots had he had? Enough to get him like this. Reduce his inhibitions, maybe? Force him to admit his attraction to Zhou Mi?
If anything was breaking through the haze that was smelling Zhou Mi’s hair, that was it.
Had Heechul been trying to manipulate him into just this position? Get the idiot drunk so he stops being an idiot. Maybe, somehow he could work his way to it. Somehow.
“When we start dating, I won’t be your roommate any more,” he said, rubbing the side of his face against Zhou Mi’s neck. Not his roommate, but his boyfriend. That was a definite step up in status, according to his brain. No more of this stupid dancing around. No more wondering. “I can’t wait.”
“You don’t want to be my roommate any more?” Zhou Mi asked.
Exactly that. “Yeah. I don’t know why I’m so stupid. I want something better.” And he had it, right there in his arms. “Zhou Mi…”
“That’s enough of that,” Zhou Mi said, pushing Kyuhyun back so that he would let go. “Go get ready for bed, okay? And I… I’ll do my best.”
Best at what? At being more than Kyuhyun’s roommate? Well, they had to get there, first. “Mmk. I’ll be out in a few.”
He found his pajamas right where he had left them, half drowning himself in the sink. He was an idiot, just not the kind he’d first thought. Heechul had all but given him the excuse he’d been wanting, even just to try. Try for one stupid drunken kiss, and if Zhou Mi had responded… Maybe that would’ve been all he’d gotten. One, stupid drunken kiss. Zhou Mi seemed more sober than him, but who knew, really? Every person showed it differently. Maybe he wasn’t so stupid after all. When he got Zhou Mi panting against him, he wanted to know that was all that they both wanted. He just needed to find out how to get a written confession out of Zhou Mi so his stupid brain would let him do something about it.
Zhou Mi was half dozing on the side of the bed, still in his clothes, when Kyuhyun nudged him toward the bathroom. And when Zhou Mi climbed in beside him, he got a whiff of toothpaste, because Zhou Mi all but joined him on his side of the bed.
It was a one-armed, awkward hug, his nose squashed into Zhou Mi’s collar bone.
“Are you okay staying here for a while longer?” Zhou Mi said, slightly garbled to his ears as he tried to breathe. “I’m not bothering you too much?”
“Sure, it’s good,” he agreed, enjoying the feel of Zhou Mi against him.
“You know I’ve liked having you here, right?”
“Me, too,” he said, patting at whatever part of Zhou Mi’s side was easily reachable.
He didn’t really know what else to say. Boy, the fun they could be having, or something. Probably they meant to sleep on their respective sides. But as Zhou Mi rolled onto his back, there was the perfect shelf of his shoulder just waiting there for Kyuhyun’s head. He absolutely meant to shift back onto his pillow, or take back his arm from over Zhou Mi’s stomach. He absolutely meant to. But he never did.
***
He woke sort of disoriented, head between two pillows. And somehow he had gotten Zhou Mi’s arm all tucked up against his chest like some sort of teddy bear. He contemplated the fingers curled near his face. The curve of them, blunted fingertips. Not graceful hands, but gorgeous ones.
He was contemplating running his lips along those fingers when Zhou Mi groaned. And then groaned again, softly. He could see Zhou Mi’s eyes just barely opening.
“What’s up?” he asked.
“Too loud,” Zhou Mi croaked almost under his breath.
He waited a moment or three. Just processing. “I was the one who was drunk last night, and you’re the one who has a hangover?”
Zhou Mi’s eyes closed in response. He guessed that this was his chance to take care of Zhou Mi.
***
Kyuhyun wiggled his toes inside of the skinny boots that Zhou Mi had tossed him earlier. He was in a skirt, again, and hanging out at the bar. Almost halfway through his shift, he kind of snickered as he saw Zhou Mi with a drink in his hand. At least he knew Zhou Mi was a lightweight. It was definitely a good thing they weren’t allowed to drink on the job or he could see Zhou Mi waking up every morning grumpy. Would definitely put a damper on their morning process, that was for sure.
Though Zhou Mi had been kind of mopey all day, which he didn’t really get. Though he figured everyone had their down days. He’d thought the night went really well. They’d gotten to dance together, Heechul seemed to think that they had a shot. What wasn’t to like? It had been way more than he’d been expecting. It almost made him… Okay, it made him a lot optimistic. He grinned as Zhou Mi walked his way, sliding off of his bar stool.
“You ready for break?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Zhou Mi said, pushing gently at his shoulder.
“Come on, Warrior Princess, steal a kiss!” a man called before they could so much as turn.
“Yeah, for us!” shouted, starting a clamor that had Kyuhyun’s head throbbing as he listened to the chant of, “kiss, kiss kiss!”
“This isn’t some kind of showroom,” Kyuhyun muttered stepping closer to Zhou Mi. “One of us could take a break. Let them calm down.”
“It’s not like they’ll forget it.” Zhou Mi seemed to have a thought, angling his face. “Here, just, kiss me on the cheek, okay? And we’ll walk away. It’ll be cute.”
There were cheers when they’d barely even started moving toward each other, Zhou Mi’s hands on his hips with a kind of sheepish smile. His hands touched Zhou Mi’s, the black satin gloves that he had first seen Zhou Mi wore also on tonight. A kiss on the cheek was so stupid.
“What the heck, let’s just do it for real,” he muttered. It wasn’t like they were five and trying to get away with something. Their manager was laughing so he didn’t figure they’d get in any trouble anyway. Maybe it seemed like it was for the customers. Maybe this was his shot.
And he wanted it so badly he could taste it.
“You…sure?” Zhou Mi asked.
“Yeah.”
The color on Zhou Mi’s mouth was like a homing beacon, and they still had to pause as their noses almost collided. He’d been too busy making sure there wasn’t any doubt in Zhou Mi’s eyes. There wasn’t any. Just something shadowed that he couldn’t make out. He had to suck in the breath he’d forgotten to take, and against his will, his eyes closed. He could almost hear the gasps as his mouth met Zhou Mi’s. The slide of the gloss of his against the rich matte of Zhou Mi’s lipstick.
He’d only meant to linger less than a moment. Just enough to prove a point. But that didn’t explain why after a few moments he was still there, and pressing closer.
He jerked his head back, the goop on their lips making it noisier than it should been, and had to dig his nails into his palm to keep from laughing like some kind of maniac. There was applause and their manager shooing them off, break aborted. The tips of his ears were burning, and his eyes skidded off of Zhou Mi’s back, like if he looked too long Zhou Mi would somehow know it. That wasn’t how he’d planned it. It was just supposed to be stupid, kind of a joke. But only he had seen the surprise in Zhou Mi’s eyes, before he’d turned away. Surprise for what? That he’d gone through with it? That it had lasted as long as it had?
Had he liked it? Maybe they wouldn’t have to talk about it. Just some random thing that happened at work, haha, how funny, just get ice cream, and hands off that keyboard. Maybe. But that didn’t explain why he’d had to cordon it off to the outer recesses of his mind, to even partially focus on the man he was sitting with. They were discussing politics? Or maybe education. He was just murmuring polite phrases and trying to get a handle on himself. The cold water helped. A little. At least, after a long while it did.
***
“Kissing with lipstick on feels really weird,” Kyuhyun muttered from where he was slouched in the passenger seat.
There was a lapse in the conversation only really filled in by whatever peppy music Zhou Mi was piping through the car through the radio. Until Zhou Mi cleared his throat, at least.
“I think it feels better without it, maybe? I don’t want you to judge based on...”
“A joke? I know how a kiss feels like, don’t worry.”
It wasn’t like Zhou Mi had to show him. Though, if he’d been more the deceptive type he could plop himself into Zhou Mi’s lap and pucker his lips and plead to be shown better. And then all his pride in his masculinity would wither away into nothing as Zhou Mi cuddled him like some overgrown kitten. He grimaced.
“At least their curiosity is gone,” Zhou Mi said. “I don’t think anyone will ask us again.”
“They don’t want me getting angry at them.”
Zhou Mi laughed. “Yes, I wouldn’t want that. Not for a…a joke.”
“Yeah, I’m sure that wasn’t the best kiss ever.” He really wanted to just shut his mouth and not analyze every little thing about it. Zhou Mi’s fingers tightening on his hips, or the warmth of his mouth. Maybe that one had been a joke, but he was pretty sure that if it happened again, no matter where they were, or how many layers of makeup, that the second one would be far from it.
“You don’t have to worry about it happening again, Kui Xian.”
Well, that was the problem, wasn’t it? He wasn’t worried at all.

Date: 2010-07-02 02:49 am (UTC)And Heechul comes in from left field with the stick! But unfortunately he didn't hit Kyu hard enough... Or maybe he should have hit Mimi as well...
Seriously though, just when I thoughts thing couldn't get any tenser! The dancing was super lovely, but my eyes got wider and wiSnder as these two dug their hole deeper and deeper. It got me thinking though - I'd like to see this fic from Mimi's pov. We really didn't get much of his struggle till now cause Kyu is Captain Oblivious and Heechul has to spell it out for him. What really possessed Mimi to bring the strange man sleeping on this couch into his bed? Fun to think about :3
Anyhoo, anxiously awaiting Monday! Good luck with your weekend stuff!
