Oh boy, haha. When I start a fic, I rarely know how long it'll go. I tend to write by the seat of my pants... Kind of portioning out chapters later, writing this scene here, and that scene there, at the beginning or end, lol. I very rarely write in order. I'll have a general idea, a big picture and ideas, and it'll usually morph a bit as it goes along, adding to it or taking a right turn. Something like that, anyway!
